One-liner
This episode details advanced study strategies for the Step 2 CK, emphasizing comprehensive content review across multiple systems (Peds, Surgery, OB-GYN, IM, Psych, Neuro), building exam endurance through long formats, and mastering question deconstruction using scenario-based learning.
High-yield summary
- Comprehensive Review: The ideal format covers a vast number of concepts (~800) across all major clinical systems (Peds, Surgery, OB-GYN, IM, Psych, Neuro).
- Exam Focus Shift: Modern exams are moving away from simple buzzwords and require descriptive knowledge of broad pathologies.
- Endurance Training: The 10-hour course format is specifically designed to build stamina necessary for the multi-hour Step 2 CK exam (which requires sustained focus).
- Question Deconstruction: Test preparation must prioritize learning how to approach NBME questions, rather than simply reviewing content in a lecture format.
- Format Flexibility: Study options can be adapted from intensive single-day formats to more manageable two-day, five-hour sessions.
Learning objectives
- Identify the core components (Peds, Surgery, OB-GYN, IM, Psych, Neuro) required for comprehensive Step 2 CK review.
- Differentiate between content memorization and structured question deconstruction techniques for board exams.
- Understand the importance of building exam endurance through simulated long study sessions.
- Plan a flexible, multi-day study schedule to optimize learning retention and minimize burnout risk.
Board exam buzzwords
| Condition | Key Finding | Association | Board Exam Tip |
| Step 2 CK Prep | Comprehensive Systems Review (Peds/Surg/OB/IM/Psych/Neuro) | High volume of concepts (~800+) | Focus on integration across systems, not isolated topics. |
| Question Deconstruction | Analyzing the question stem and options in real-time | Active learning; simulating test conditions | Never study content without practicing how to apply it to a clinical vignette. |
| Exam Endurance | Sustained focus over 9+ hours | Long course formats (10-hour day) | Treat stamina building as seriously as content review; simulate the full exam length. |
| Descriptive Pathology | Detailed understanding of disease mechanisms | Moving away from buzzwords/simple recall | When reviewing, ask "Why?" and "How does this manifest clinically?" for every finding. |
Rapid review table
| Topic | Key Point | Context | Exam Relevance |

Management pearls
- Prioritize Question Approach: Dedicate study time to practicing how to answer questions (deconstruction) rather than just reading content summaries.
- Simulate Exam Length: Utilize long, multi-hour review sessions to build the necessary physical and mental stamina for the Step 2 CK exam day.
- Integrate Systems: When studying a topic (e.g., renal failure), always consider its implications across multiple systems (cardiology, endocrinology) to reflect board-style questions.
- Review Updates Constantly: Recognize that testing bodies frequently update their content and question style; continuous review is mandatory.
Don't miss
Integration & clinical reasoning
- Cognitive Load Management: The discussion of different course lengths (10hr vs 5hr/2 day) directly relates to managing cognitive load, a key concept in medical education and performance optimization.
- Curriculum Mapping: The systematic review across Peds, Surgery, OB-GYN, IM, Psych, and Neuro demonstrates the need for comprehensive curriculum mapping to ensure no major domain is overlooked.
- Test Anxiety Mitigation: By simulating long study blocks and providing structured question deconstruction, the preparation aims to mitigate test anxiety by making the exam format predictable.

Okay, welcome. My name is Divine. This is episode 254 from Not Miss Speaking. I believe this is episode 254 of the Divine Intervention Podcast. And in this podcast, I'm going to be just talking about some courses that I have upcoming. I know that this is a pretty busy testing season for many people, right? You know, everyone is trying to meet the era's deadline. So I decided to be a little more long-rangey with my planning, at least with the time I know I presently have. So there are three kinds of courses. And again, this is something that people have sent me tons of emails for. So I figured I just make a podcast and answer these questions, right? So this will be a super short podcast, no life lesson at the end. Just, you know, kind of take notes on this. So if you're interested in any of these things, right? So there are three groups of courses I'm going to be offering over the next month, roughly, right? Again, to kind of help people bit the step 2 CK, you know, I want to get my scores in before I hear us opens kind of deal. So the first one, at least 10 hour step 2 CK courses I offer, right? So these things have been very well received. And again, you know, I make improvements all the time. The step 2 CK 10 A course, basically, it's a one day course where in one day we review Peds, surgery, OB-GYN, internal medicine, psych, and neuro. We do everything in one day. It's a 10 hour session held over Zoom. And we'll usually start, we'll start, we'll go from like 6 to 10 a.m.
Pacific Standard Time, take a tour break and then go from noon to 4 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, take a tour break and then go from 6 to 8 p.m. Pacific Standard Time and take a tour break. Now, with this course, we end up going about over like almost 800 concepts that are classically tested on the NV Me exams, right? And I cover a lot of stuff like a lot of these on usual pathologies as well that people have not necessarily seen on exams. Like, I mean, they've not necessarily seen, right? Like in most of the common study resources. And also one thing I also focus heavily on, right? With the newer NBN Is, many people that mean, as you know, many of you that have taken these exams, right? You know that the NV Me, they are shifting away from buzzwords and they are being very descriptive for a broad range of pathologies. So this course really hones in on that stuff so that you build up that scale, right? And I give time at the end of every hour to answer people's questions. Again, it has been very well received. There's tons of people that have been through the course, found it to be really helpful. So if that's something you're interested in, the next one will be taking place on the 22nd of August. I mean, I've already studied registering people for that pretty much. I've actually had a pretty large number of poor register for that one. And then on the 5th of September, so 8, 22 and 9, 5, those are the days for those courses.
So if you want to sign up, go ahead and shoot me an email as long as the course is not full, I will still register people, right? So that's the first course. Now, the second course is basically the same thing as the first course. But this is just in a response to a question that many people have posed that divine. Is it possible to break the 10 hour course up into two, five hour days? And yes, that is possible. Yes, that is possible. So the two hour, like the two day, five hour per day course, right? It's going to be on the 11th and the 12th of this month. It's going to be on the 11th and on the 12th of September, not of this month, sorry, of September. So 9, 11 and 9, 12, right? So 9, 11 and 9, 12. And basically, the way that course is going to be patterned, right, is we're going to do an afternoon section from noon to 3 pm specific time, right? So we're going to, oh, sorry, let me stick. We're going to do an afternoon section from noon to 5 pm specific time, right? So noon to 5 pm specific time, right? Remember, eastern time is three hours ahead. So noon to 5 pm specific time. And then we will take one and a half hour break, right? And then we'll then go from 630 to 830 specific time, right? So it's known to 5 pm, specific time on 9, 11, right? And then we'll take one and a half hour break and then we'll go from 630 to 830 pm specific standard time.
So that'll be five hours and then it will be the exact same time on the next day, two to five pm specific time and then 630 to 830 pm specific standard time on those days, right? So that's the two day five hour option. Again, I'm going to offer a, I may offer it once again in September, but I don't know what my schedule will look like. So I'm not going to make any promises, but for sure on 9, 11 and 9, 12, that's where I have those two day five hour options. And then the last course, right? So this is something that again has been heavy, heavy, heavy requested from people and I kind of made an announcement on this a few weeks ago that I do this course. So it's an MBME Test Ticking Strategy course. So the goal of this course is on how to approach MBME questions for step two CK, right? How to approach MBME questions for step two CK? This course is going to take place on the 10th of September. It's going to take place on the 10th of September. It's going to take place on the 10th of September and the 10th of September is Thursday, right? It's going to take place on the 10th of September and that course is going to be from four to about six or six 30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, right? So about four to six or six 30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. Basically, the way the course is going to be set up is I'm going to have a bunch of questions. So I'm actually an extremely good, thankfully, I'm an extremely good question writer.
So our right, a bunch of MBME style questions because again, it doesn't make sense to teach people testicking strategy by just teaching them like a stock lecture format. It doesn't work, right? So what's going to happen is we're going to have a bunch of questions, right? We're going to probably have like at least more than 20 questions. It's going to be more than 20 for sure. And we're going to review those MBME questions and as we go through, which MBME question in real time, I'll have everyone in the class answer the question, right? And then after that, I'll then teach you how these questions are deconstructed and how to approach them. So it's how to approach MBME questions. It will be useful for anyone taking step two CK and for anyone taking step three. It will also be partially useful for pressing taking step one, step one has an almost different set of rules that are works by. But if you're taking the step one exam, that'll also be a useful course that also be a very useful course to take. So it's taking place on the 10th is going to be for like two to two and a half hours and it's going to be from four PM Pacific standard time to somewhere between six to six 30 PM Pacific standard time because I'll try to give some time at the end to just answer general questions people have on step two CK and all these classes are going to be held via Zoom. So again, I'm keeping the registration open. If it's a class you want to register for, go ahead and shoot me an email.
You can either send me an email at divine intervention podcasts with an S at the end at gmail.com or you can email me through the website divineinterventionpodcasts.com. So there should be an email once you pay, I'll go ahead and register you for the course and then I'll send a Zoom link the day before so that you're ready and prepared for for the course. And again, I suspect you'll find you to be helpful. I'm just offering all these courses in this time frame because again of the era's deadline kind of coming up. So you know, most people you probably want to be done with all your step two CK whatever's right by the very end of September, right? If you're really living on the edge, maybe first week in October, but that's kind of like kind of putting a seven a bus spot there, right? So I'll probably offer some iteration of these courses later after like the 12th of September, but I don't know my schedule yet. So I'm not going to make any promises I cannot keep. And I also said something about step one, right? So in terms of step one, I'm going to be having a step one course coming up very soon. So it will almost certainly come up at the end like the very tail end of September or the first week roughly in October, but I don't want to give specific dates again because I'm not really sure of my schedule. So it'll be an integrated course. It'll probably be a few days not it's not going to be like a 1 D course against the phone has a ton of information, right?
So I will make an announcement on that very soon in a podcast. So just beyond the look out and you'll learn you'll find this hopefully to be very helpful out for your exams. It's going to be like a very similar course as my step 2 C key course is going to have scenarios again. I'm not going to do a course where it's just lecture. That's a waste of time, right? I'm not going to do that. So what I'm going to do is like I currently have like 800 like vignettes scenarios clinical presentations for the step 2 C key course. I'm going to do the same thing for step one. It'll probably be a lot more than 800 just because of the way step one is and we use those scenarios to show you how to because the goal of these courses is one to show you how to approach NV Me questions but to teach you the content as tested on NV Me exams, right? So if you're interested in any of these things feel free to reach out to me but again the step one course dates. I'll make the announcement very soon. I'll make the announcement very soon. I want some a little more sure of my schedule and some of you may be like divine this step 2 C key course. Why you making it 10 hours? Why don't you just make it five hours two days for everyone? I don't do that because one of the goals of the course is to try to build people up to be able to focus for long periods of time, right? Try to build people up to you to focus for long periods of time, right? What do I mean by that?
If you're taking step 2 C key it's a nine hour exam, right? Your brain has to be working for like nine hours, right? I mean it's eight hours plus a one hour break, right? So that's why I'm still going to be offering that 10 hour option but again on a limited basis I'll offer the two day five hours per day option and these courses I update them very regularly, right? Because again if you notice on my website, right? You'll be like wow, divine. Why do you keep making these new podcast, new podcast, new podcast? The thing is the NV Me they're not stocking the 80s, they're not stocking the 90s, they're not stocking the 2000s, right? They come, they on a regular basis updates what they test and how they test it. So I think of my these courses as like software in a sense, right? I keep updating, I keep updating like between the first iteration of this step 2 C key course and now the course has probably changed by almost like 40% right? And you will keep changing, right? Because again you always want to keep up, right? I mean if you always want to keep up basically with the NV Me's right? So I keep applying these bolt on updates here and there here and there, again just to make the course better for people that are more useful as time goes on. So again if you're interested, reach out to me, send me an email, divine intervention podcasts with an S at the end at gmail.com or email me through the website.
We'll go through these things, I'll give you some more details about the course, I'll register you for the course and then the day before I'll send you a zoom link and then you just join via zoom and again many people after a thought test seeking strategies for years, right? And again many of people have worked with have been very very successful. So if you're interested in any of these things, feel free to reach out to me and I'll be more than happy to help. So I'll see you next time. Please subscribe to the You Tube channel, it's called Divine Intervention, USMLE Podcasts and Videos. I have these podcasts on Apple podcasts on Spotify and Google Play. So please feel free to subscribe. And then I also have what press website, right? Divine Intervention Podcast.com. I know that this command complete from these podcasts apps, like Divine I only see the most recent 140 episodes. It's a Word Press role, there's really not more I can do about it, right? So, but if you want all the podcasts from episode one from the very beginning, go on the website, you can download it from there. So thank you for listening, I'll see you next time, God bless you and have a great day.
Practice questions — USMLE style
Question 1 — Board Preparation Strategy
A medical student preparing for Step 2 CK is concerned about the sheer volume of material required for comprehensive review. They are considering a single, intensive day-long course that covers multiple major clinical systems. Which combination of specialties would this type of high-yield, broad-spectrum board preparation course typically include?
- A) Dermatology, Ophthalmology, and Rheumatology
- B) Pediatrics, Surgery, OB-GYN, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, and Neurology
- C) Nephrology, Endocrinology, and Gastroenterology
- D) Cardiology, Pulmonology, and Hematology
Answer: B. The transcript explicitly mentions that the 10-hour course reviews "Peds, surgery, OB-GYN, internal medicine, psych, and neuro," indicating a comprehensive coverage of major clinical systems. Options A, C, and D represent narrower groupings of specialties.
Question 2 — USMLE Examination Trends
A resident is reviewing recent National Board Medical Examination (NBME) questions for Step 2 CK and notices a distinct shift in question writing style compared to previous years. The new questions are described as being highly descriptive rather than relying on simple buzzwords. What does this trend suggest about the intended learning outcome of the examination?
- A) That rote memorization of specific diagnostic criteria is sufficient for passing the exam.
- B) That test-takers must focus solely on recognizing classic, textbook pathologies.
- C) That clinical reasoning and application of knowledge across a broad range of descriptive scenarios are prioritized.
- D) That the exam will revert to a format heavily reliant on single-system review modules.
Answer: C. The speaker notes that NBM Es are "shifting away from buzzwords and they are being very descriptive for a broad range of pathologies." This indicates that the goal is not just recall (buzzwords) but the ability to apply knowledge in complex, real-world clinical scenarios (descriptive pathology), requiring strong clinical reasoning.
Question 3 — Optimal Study Scheduling
A student wishes to maximize their learning efficiency while preparing for an extensive board exam like Step 2 CK. They are debating between a single, long block of study time versus splitting the material into multiple shorter sessions over several days. Based on principles of optimal learning and endurance, which approach is generally recommended?
- A) A single, continuous 10-hour session to build stamina for the full exam day.
- B) Splitting the content into two or more manageable, focused daily blocks (e.g., two 5-hour days).
- C) Focusing exclusively on one specialty per day to achieve deep mastery of that system.
- D) Utilizing only video lectures rather than question-based review to minimize cognitive load.
Answer: B. While the speaker mentions the benefit of building stamina for a long exam, they also offer and recommend the "two day, five hour per day course" option specifically because it addresses the student's desire to break up the 10-hour content into more manageable chunks (9/11 and 9/12). This reflects an understanding of optimal scheduling.
Question 4 — Approach to Board Questions
A medical educator emphasizes that teaching test preparation strategy cannot be done through a traditional lecture format. Instead, they advocate for a method involving the active review of numerous clinical vignettes. What is the primary pedagogical goal of this question-based approach?
- A) To allow students to memorize the correct answer associated with specific keywords.
- B) To provide passive exposure to high-yield facts without requiring critical thinking.
- C) To teach students how to deconstruct complex questions and systematically approach problem-solving in real time.
- D) To ensure that all content covered is presented in a lecture format for maximum retention.
Answer: C. The speaker states, "it doesn't make sense to teach people testicking strategy by just teaching them like a stock lecture format. It doesn't work... we're going to review those MBME questions and as we go through... I'll then teach you how these questions are deconstructed and how to approach them." The focus is on the process of answering, not just the content itself.
