Hardy-Weinberg Population Equilibrium & Calculation Engine

Complete visual guide to allele frequency equations, carrier frequency 2q shortcut for rare autosomal recessive conditions, sex-linked male vs. female math, unaffected sibling 2/3 probability trap, and the 5 violation conditions.

Disease Frequency Input

Select high-yield board presets or adjust slider.

Prevalence (1 in N live births): 1 in 2,500
1 in 100 1 in 10,000 1 in 40,000
1 in

In X-linked recessive diseases (e.g. Hemophilia A, DMD): males are hemizygous, so male prevalence = q, female prevalence = q², female carrier frequency = 2q.

Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium Outputs

Cystic Fibrosis (Caucasian)
Recessive Allele (q) 0.0200 1 / 50
Dominant Allele (p) 0.9800 49 / 50
Carrier Freq (2pq) 0.0392 1 in 25 (3.92%)
Homozygous Normal (p²) 0.9604 96.0%
Step-by-Step Board Math Walkthrough
1. Given disease frequency q² = 1 / 2,500 = 0.0004
2. Recessive allele frequency q = √(0.0004) = 1 / 50 = 0.02
3. Normal allele frequency p = 1 − 0.02 = 0.98 (≈ 1.0)
4. Heterozygous Carrier frequency = 2pq = 2 × (0.98) × (0.02) = 0.0392 ≈ 1 in 25
5. Offspring risk for couple with unknown carrier status = (Carrier Father 1/25) × (Carrier Mother 1/25) × (AR child risk 1/4) = 1 in 2,500
COMLEX / USMLE Board Trap: When a vignette states a patient has a sibling with Cystic Fibrosis (or any AR condition), the asymptomatic patient's probability of being a carrier is 2/3 (67%), NOT 1/2! (Since the patient is healthy, the homozygous affected genotype aa is excluded from the denominator: 2pq / [p² + 2pq] = 2/3).
