Physiology
MET uses post-isometric relaxation: after an isometric contraction, the Golgi tendon organs and muscle spindles allow the muscle to relax below baseline tone. Reciprocal inhibition activates the antagonist while the agonist relaxes.
Treatment Steps
- Position the joint at the restrictive barrier.
- Ask the patient to gently contract the target muscle for 3–5 seconds against your counterforce.
- Have the patient fully relax.
- Slowly take up the new barrier and repeat 3–5 times.
